Peanet Communications, Inc. has its roots in graphic design. Since the late Eighties, we were designing catalogs, brochures, annual reports, logos - you get the picture. We were a small, four-person outfit that was making a decent dollar.

In early-mid 1993, we were finishing up a brochure design job for a large client. They asked us if we could put it online, on this new thing called the World Wide Web, in a strange new language called HTML. We saw this as an opportunity to get some knowledge about the Internet. Sure, we had been online and using email for a while, but that was really all. The Web was VERY different. At the time, it was estimated that there were about 100 websites in existence anywhere. We did not have many examples of what a web page should look like.

It was not long before we started doing more sites. The design was going well, but we had the same problem at the end of each job: we would tell the client to go find an ISP to host their site, and we would see that same glazed-over look on the client's face. "What's that?" was their response. It quickly became evident that we needed to be a "one-stop" for people looking to have a presence on the World Wide Web.

We made the decision to add Web hosting to our services. It was early 1994. We began to find graphic designers that were learning HTML, and many of them were looking for a good hosting service once they were done designing their sites. More and more work was getting referred to us. The word was getting around.

We never intended for hosting to take over the company like it has. It just kept getting more popular. We still do quite a bit of web development, but the majority of our revenues, far and away, come from hosting. We have always had a simple idea about Web hosting - that a host should deliver a webpage to the world as fast as possible. People hate to wait. We have to guess that this was an idea not understood by other hosting companies, based on the numbers of clients that came to us from our competitors. We never tire of hearing that familiar story about how things are faster and more reliable than they were at a previous provider. As one recent signup told us: "Your service is boringly trouble-free. It is everything you promised it would be and more."
